Expressing myself through art has always been at the center of my life. As a young native Californian, I would draw and sketch from nature (birds, horses, dogs), becoming familiar with perspective, composition, values, color, form and textures. Mainly through self-taught studies and workshops with professional artists in a wide-array of mediums, art has always been a way for me to share what I feel and see.
I have explored art through many mediums both in the studio and en plein air. I usually try to envision which medium will best convey what I have in mind for the finished artwork. My favorite aspects of using soft pastels is the immediacy of the medium, the brilliance of the colors and watching the many layers interact. I more recently discovered watercolors and oils. Painting with these mediums is spontaneous yet requires planning, teaching me about color mixing, and yields unique textures as well as minute details.
