Profile
Welcome to Shana Kaplan Photography! I am a nature photographer, based in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. I find endless inspiration in beautiful landscapes that are wild and bold – like big mountains, big waters and big skies!
What sets me apart as a photographer is my art design and environmental background. I was formally trained in art and design, then I spent 25 years working on environmental issues managing the restoration of some of the US’s most important ecosystems. Delving deep in the social, political and economic conflicts surrounding natural resources further strengthened my reverence for life sustaining ecosystems.
I am a passionate adventurer with a zest for life and wanderlust. Often my photos are taken on adventure trips into remote and wild places where beautiful compositions and patterns unfold amid storms, sunrises and sunsets.
I was a baby born with a camera in hand. Raised in a small town, my youth was spent in the spectacular Adirondack Park of NY – 6 million acres, the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States. It was here that I developed an affinity for natural places, being surrounded by high peaks, boreal forests, fall colors, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, wildlife and fresh air.
Starting with Polaroids, photography was always my hobby. My journey started capturing the scenic views of my hometown, and evolved into a lifelong adventure exploring diverse cultures and terrains including India, New Zealand, Philippines, Mexico, United Kingdom, Scotland, and central Europe. Initially my adventure travels involved film cameras where I was limited to the number of images I could shoot. I was an early adopter of the digital camera which enabled me to capture many more images, eventually expanding from a point and shoot, to a compact sensor, then to full frame. Along the way I adopted the lighter weight mirrorless technology which made traveling easier.
My love for travel became the driving force behind my photography career. In 2019 I took my passion and dedication to the next level and opened my photography business. I’ve trained with some talented photographers including Jerry Dodrill, Lisa Langell and Glen Tamblingson.
Specializing in landscape photography, I have an innate ability to capture the essence of each location. I have an eye for composition and a deep appreciation for natural light, resulting in photographs that transport viewers to the very heart of the landscapes I explore. Beyond photography, I am an advocate for environmental conservation and use my platform to raise awareness about the importance of preserving natural habitats.
Being the person on the trip who gets up early for the sunrise and stays up late for the sunset or starts is exhausting, when all day we are hiking, biking or paddling many miles on an adventure. But having my eyes open for those amazing moments in mother nature is worth the effort.
My goals are:
~ sharing the beauty that abounds in nature
~ using photography to grow community, heal, educate and inspire.
~ seeking out hidden gems and sharing the magic of the world
~ immortalize the awe-inspiring beauty of nature
~ inspiring others to embark on their own adventures and appreciate the wonders of the planet
I am seeking partnerships with artists and organizations to bring art to areas that are underserved or lacking art – public art projects, schools, offices, senior/nursing homes, libraries and public spaces.
My work is currently showing at North Tahoe Art in Kings Beach, California, and available online at: https://www.lovenaturephotos.com
